Recovering from a shift on the line

Sustained overhead reach, repeated grip and ten hours standing on concrete. What that pattern does to a shoulder, what the research supports, and how a 9:30 AM open and a 9 PM close fit around second and third shift.

Evidence review 8 min read Updated
Both thumbs into the top of the shoulder — where a week of reaching overhead usually ends up.

More than 20,000 people build airplanes in Wichita between the two big airframe plants, by Choose Wichita’s count, and a great deal of that work happens with both arms above the heart. The shoulder is where it lands — around hour eight, and again at three in the morning when you roll onto it. We’re at 10646 W Central Ave #106 on the west side, open seven days from 9:30 AM until 9 PM, and 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday.

What does a shift of overhead work do to a shoulder?

It keeps a small group of muscles switched on for hours with no real rest between reps. Holding an arm above shoulder height is low-load and endless rather than heavy and brief, and by the back half of a shift the top of the trapezius, the muscles around the shoulder blade and the front of the neck are all carrying more than their share. Soreness that evening. Stiffness the next morning, worse on the side you sleep on.

Arms above the heart

The angle matters more than the weight. A rivet gun held at chin height for ninety seconds is one job; the same tool held at eye level under a wing panel for most of ten hours is a different one, and the circulation to a raised arm is working against gravity the whole time. When someone lies down and points, the top of the shoulder and the base of the neck is where the finger usually goes.

The grip

Drills, clecos, torque wrenches, sealant guns, and a full shift of squeezing something. The forearm ends up tight from the wrist to the outside of the elbow, and it stays tight overnight because nothing in a normal evening asks it to lengthen. Most people who book for a sore shoulder never mention their forearms. Ask for them anyway — ten minutes below the elbow is ten minutes well spent out of ninety.

Kneeling, crouching and getting inside the structure

Assembly happens in spaces built around the airplane, not around the person. Kneeling on a fuselage floor, crouching under a wing, holding half a twist while both hands do something precise to a tolerance. Hips, low back and one side of the neck take that, and because the work is asymmetric the tightness that follows is asymmetric too: one hip, one shoulder, one side. Say which side at the start of the session rather than waiting to be asked.

Ten hours on concrete

Standing still on a hard floor is harder on the calves, arches and low back than walking the same hours would be, because nothing changes length. It’s the reason the combo session — thirty minutes of foot reflexology first, then the rest on the body — is our most-booked format. Feet that have been on concrete since six get half an hour of their own, and the back still gets the rest.

Does massage help after a physical shift?

For everyday muscle soreness and tension, the evidence is supportive enough to be worth the hour. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health lists massage among the approaches that may improve pain and function in chronic low-back pain, and states that the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low. The American Massage Therapy Association holds that massage can improve health and wellness. Mayo Clinic describes relaxation techniques as a way to lower stress and ease tense muscles, which is most of what people are after at the end of a long one.

What it isn’t: we don’t diagnose anything, we don’t treat injuries, and nothing here replaces the plant medical office or your own doctor. If a shoulder is newly sharp, getting worse week on week, waking you at night or sending numbness down the arm, see a doctor first and book the massage afterwards. The two sit alongside each other without any trouble at all.

What does recovery look like when your body clock is inverted?

Sleep comes first and everything else fits around it. The practical problem with a rotating schedule is that the hours you have free are the hours most of the city is shut. Ours are the two ends of the day, which is where second and third shift happen to live.

Coming off third shift

You clock out somewhere around six or seven in the morning while everybody else is starting. Our door opens at 9:30 AM, seven days, which puts a session in the gap between the drive home and the sleep. The other option is to sleep first and come in mid-afternoon, which suits people whose shoulders hurt more after lying on them than before. Both work, and the studio is open across the whole stretch either way.

Finishing second shift

Second shift is the harder one to solve, because most of the city is dark by the time you’re out. We close at 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. A 90-minute session has to start well before that, and weekday evenings after 5:30 are the busiest part of our week, so this is the one to call about. Ring (316) 347-6999 before you drive over and ask what’s open.

Of the 14 Wichita massage businesses that state a booking policy in their own words, 10 are appointment-only or appointment-first. On a fixed Monday-to-Friday that’s a minor inconvenience. On a rotating schedule it decides whether you go at all.

How far is it from the plants?

Spirit AeroSystems is 13.8 mi southeast of the studio, about 23 minutes. Textron Aviation is 7.3 mi south, about 13. That’s a drive across town at the end of a shift. We’re on W Central Ave in west Wichita, and the airframe plants are on the south and southeast sides of the city.

Where the geography stops being a problem is if you live west and commute in. Maize is about 13 minutes straight up N Maize Rd, Goddard 14 minutes southwest, Colwich 17. From any of those, Central and Maize is on the way home rather than a detour, and the same goes for anyone in 67212, 67205, 67209 or 67235.

Kellogg (US-54/400) west to the Maize Road exit — that's where the freeway section ends — then north about a mile and a half to Central. Turn west and we're a couple of hundred yards down on the north side, in the strip by Chili's and the Walmart Neighborhood Market, across from the Dillons.

Coming down from the north instead: K-96 or 21st Street North to Maize Road, then south past NewMarket Square about two and a half miles to Central. We're on the north side of Central, just west of the intersection. If you’ve not been before and you’d rather not hunt for the door at nine at night, call (316) 347-6999 and we’ll walk you in.

What should I book after a shift?

Ninety minutes on the table is $90, and it’s the one to pick when a shoulder has had a full week of overhead work — long enough to spend real time on one side and still reach everything else. Sixty is $60 and covers the whole body without rushing. Thirty is $40 and handles a single area. The step from sixty to ninety is $30 more for fifty per cent more table time.

If you stand all day

The combo puts thirty minutes of foot reflexology first and the rest on the body: $60 for the hour, $90 for ninety minutes. If you’d rather not get on a table at all — some people finishing a shift genuinely don’t want to undress — the foot massage is $30 for half an hour and $50 for the hour, in a recliner with your clothes on and your trousers rolled to the knee.

Cupping on a tight shoulder

Cupping is a $20 add-on to a session you’ve already booked, never a booking on its own. NCCIH’s position is that cupping may help reduce pain, but the evidence for this isn’t very strong. It leaves round marks for several days, and NCCIH is specific that the origin of those marks should be explained to health care providers so they won’t be mistaken for signs of physical abuse — relevant if you have a physical or a doctor’s appointment in the next week. The same page notes cupping can cause persistent skin discoloration, scars, burns and infections, and may worsen eczema or psoriasis. There’s a fuller account in our guide to the marks.

Walk in, book online, or call (316) 347-6999. Walk-in means no reservation is required; it doesn’t mean a slot is sitting empty, so a two-minute call before you drive over is worth it — particularly for ninety minutes, and for anything that needs two therapists free at once. The whole menu, every length and every price, is on the services page, and if a specific shoulder is the reason you’re reading this, the neck and shoulder page goes into what that session covers.

Questions we get asked

Shift work and recovery

Is a massage worth it after a ten-hour shift, or should I just sleep?
Sleep wins if you have to pick one. For the muscle soreness that's still there tomorrow, the NCCIH lists massage among the approaches that may improve pain and function in chronic low-back pain, and says the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low. Ninety minutes on the table is $90 and sixty is $60. If you're too tired to get on a table at all, the foot massage is $30 for half an hour, clothes on, in a recliner.
I work second shift. Are you still open when I clock out?
We close at 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday, seven days a week with no closed day. A 90-minute session has to start well before the close, and weekday evenings after 5:30 are our busiest stretch, so call (316) 347-6999 before you drive over and ask what's open.
I come off third shift at six in the morning. When can I come in?
The door opens at 9:30 AM, every day of the week. That's early enough to fit a session between the drive home and sleep, or you can sleep first and come in mid-afternoon — both work. We're at 10646 W Central Ave #106, north side of W Central just west of N Maize Rd.
How long should I book if my shoulder has had a full week of overhead work?
Ninety minutes, $90. That's the length that leaves room to spend real time on one shoulder and the base of the neck and still get to the rest of you. Sixty at $60 covers the whole body without rushing; thirty at $40 is a one-area session. Tell the therapist which shoulder, which side of the neck, and how the arm was positioned all week.
Will cupping help a tight shoulder from grip and drill work?
NCCIH says cupping may help reduce pain, but that the evidence for this isn't very strong. It's a $20 add-on to a session you've already booked, not something you can book on its own. It leaves round marks for several days, and NCCIH is specific that the origin of those marks should be explained to health care providers so they aren't mistaken for signs of physical abuse — worth remembering if you have a physical coming up. More on the marks.
Do massage therapists in Wichita have to be licensed?
Kansas has no state massage license. The City of Wichita licenses at city level — Chapter 3.55 requires a business license and a therapist permit for every therapist, both renewed every two years, and every working therapist carries a city photo ID card. Ask to see it any time. The NCCIH's own advice is to ask about the training, experience and credentials of the therapist you're considering, and that holds anywhere.
